Wood Refinishing

Where Quality Matters

Wood Refinishing Done Professionally

Think back…your doors were absolutely beautiful when you had them installed. They had a great look, with a smooth even tone and luster. Fast-forward a year or two, and they look horrendous. What happened? UV exposure. The clear coat they once had on them, has been chewed up by the sun. After the clear coat was eaten away, the stain was attacked, until the wood itself is being weathered by the elements. Don’t wait until it gets to that point. And don’t run down to the nearest big-box store and grab a can of cheap varnish to do it yourself. Trust us. You’ll be back out there in a couple of months repeating the process. Refinishing wood surfaces, doors especially, is an art. It takes lots of practice. Thankfully, Accurate Painting of NWFL is highly experienced in the art of wood refinishing.

Wood, being a natural product, is more subject to wear and tear than artificial materials, such as plastics and some metals. It has been used for a much longer time to build homes and make furniture and its characteristics are well known. We have a better and better understanding of preventive care that keeps wood from prematurely aging. We can mitigate and repair damage, with wood reconditioning and repairs.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that once something has some wear or damage, it must be discarded. Wood can be refinished, reworked, and redone so it’s as good as new or better.

Wood Refinishing

Wood refinishing – How does this work?

Wood refinishing requires some tools and skills. It also requires patience. This is how people have been refinishing wood for generations. You’ll want to get used to working with your hands. While it’s possible to use power sanders and strippers, we recommend a more personal, tactile approach.

  • Judge the item. Is it worth refinishing? Sometimes an item is just too damaged. Is it made from composite wood or scraps?
  • Clean it. This is a good way to bring previously hidden damage to your attention.
  • Remove the finish. There may be several layers from previous finishing attempts.
  • Apply sanding sealer.
  • Stain the wood.
  • Put on a coat of finish.

Why Employ a Professional for Wood Refinishing in NW Florida?

Wood refinishing can be a DIY job, but it’s not a quick one. While the pitfalls of wood refinishing won’t necessarily destroy your home, they have been known to kill several weekends. A professional or someone with experience will know which techniques work best with the wood in question.

When it comes to removing finish, for example, there is a big difference between applying chemicals or using a hand sander. Similarly, a seamless wood-staining job takes experience to achieve. It’s extremely ambitious to aim to do this right first time around, even with modern products. A professional can advise on the stain to use depending on the original wood color. He or she can also offer expertise regarding whether to use water-based, oil-based, or gel stain?
